The SMO grade is developed from the combination of nitrogen and molybdenum having an austenitic structure with down carbon amount. The full austenitic microstructure offers high performance in the quenched state. The structure of flanges become slightly harder when exposed in terms of higher temperatures.

Stainless Steel 254 SMO Flanges are highly alloyed with SS austenitic structure designed for severe marine applications. Stainless Steel 254 SMO is from the family of austenitic SS. This grade is composed of alloying elements offer great service in adverse conditions. These flanges are best known for their higher strength and ductility. However, this grade is readily weldable and fabricable. In the refining process, its structure has a tougher and stronger structure after performing the heat treatment process. The standard welding operations performed on flanges are TIG, MIG, submerged arc welding, resistance welding and more. The machinability of grade requires low speeds, feeds, cut depths, coolants, and lubricants. This cut off the price of machining. Stainless Steel 254 SMO Flanges are best for hoisted temperature and pressurized applications with higher strengths.
