Overview of Stainless Steel 317L grade:
It is a molybdenum containing, low carbon version austenitic stainless steel grade. It has a higher amount of chromium, nickel content for higher corrosion resistance. It has increased resistance to chemical attacks such as acetic acids, formic acids, sulfuric acids, citric acids, and other harsh acids. It has a lower amount of carbon that provides excellent resistance to sensitization. After welding, it got higher creep, stress to rupture and high tensile strength even in the higher temperatures. It turns in the non-magnetic state after the annealing operation. However, it turns to magnetic after welding. These fasteners are commonly used in chemical processing environments and process equipment. It shows excellent corrosion resistance in the typical environments even that contain a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds even in the chloride containing environments. Because of the presence of lower carbon content, it becomes slightly resistive to intergranular corrosion. It has the tendency to fight with pitting corrosion.
Because of the presence of alloying elements, resistance to oxidation properties got increased. It has a lower rate of scaling property in the nominal temperatures up to 1600 to 1650 deg F.
Stainless Steel 1.4438 Fasteners can be processed from all resistance and fusion welding operations with the exception of gas welding. Moreover, it can be welded with or without filler materials. It posses great machinability thus it requires low speeds and feeds to reduce the work harden property. It relieves some ships so chip breakers are recommended for it. SS fasteners are readily fabricable with all standard type of machines.
