In a combination of low carbon content, the chromium imparts outstanding resistance to heat and corrosion. Some of the other elements such as titanium, nickel, aluminum, sulfur, nitrogen, copper, selenium, and phosphorus may be added to increase the corrosion resistance to the specific environment, or to enhance the oxidation resistance, and also to impart the special characteristic.
Most of the stainless steel is first melted in basic oxygen or electric arc furnaces and subsequently refined into another steelmaking vessel, mostly to lower the carbon content. In the process of argon oxygen decarburization, the mixture of argon gas and oxygen is injected into liquid steel. By changing the ratio of the argon and oxygen, it is possible to eliminate carbon to controlled levels. It can be done by oxidizing it to carbon monoxide without losing and oxidizing expensive chromium. Thus, the raw material which is cheaper to use such as high carbon ferrochromium can be used in the early melting operations.
