About the stainless steel 446-
Stainless steel 446 is the high chromium ferritic heat resistant alloy that is having high oxidation resistance, sulfidation and hot corrosion resistance ability. This alloy is commonly used between the temperatures ranging from 1500 Deg F to 2100 Deg F, although the elevated temperature strength is lower. 446 SS alloy is the heat resistant alloy that tolerates the molten brass and copper.
As with the high chromium ferritic stainless, this grade embrittles severely in the temperature ranging 700 deg F to 1000 deg F. Alloy SS 446 should be used at this temperature unless full room temperature ductility loss might be tolerated. Sigma phase embrittlement might occur upon long time exposure in the temperature ranging 100 Deg F to 1300 Deg F.
Stainless steel 446 alloy is highly ductile to the brittle impact transition temperature. The successful forming and bending by the edge preparation, low forming speed and preheating at temperature 250 Deg F to 400 Deg F can be aided. Annealing when needed, can be done at the temperature ranging from 1550 to 1650 Deg F, and followed by fast cooling. Welding can be done through the conventional methods and post heating and preheating to the temperature at 300 deg f to 600 deg f is helpful.
