Alloy Description:
SS 321 is titanium stabilized austenitic SS grade. It has good general corrosion resistance. This alloy has excellent resistance to intergranular attacks in the exposures to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 deg F to 1500 deg F. this alloy resists oxidation to 1500 deg F to 816 deg F. moreover, this alloy has higher creep and stress rupture properties than other standard alloys. It has also good low temperature toughness. This alloy is also available in higher carbon composition.

This alloy was developed for improved creep resistance and for higher strength at temperatures above 1000 deg F. In most cases; the carbon content on it enables dual certifications. However, this alloy cannot be hardened by the heat treatment process, only cold working operations is desired. In this alloy different welding operations can perform such as TIG, MIG, arc welding and gas welding.

This alloy has great pitting corrosion resistance ability that ensures its workability in odd environments. It is best to use in the crevice corrosion cracking zone. It works great in the chemical-induced environments that contain phosphoric acids, nitric acids, acetic acids, formic acids, and alkalis. It works great in the organic and inorganic compound containing environments.

Can you heat treat 321 stainless steel buttweld fittings?

Yes, 321 stainless steel buttweld fittings can be heat treated. Heat treating can be accomplished by annealing the fittings at temperatures 1050-1150°C for 30 minutes per 25mm thickness, followed by rapid cooling. This process will increase the strength and hardness of the fittings but also makes them more susceptible to corrosion due to their increased hardness.
