About the boss:
Using a boss is a technique for joining two fluid carrying pipes, tubing, and hoses. In these fittings, a male threaded part is aligned into a female threaded part that provides a mechanical seal. It differs from others in that additional nut is tightened over the boss into a chamfered area creating a fluid tight seal. Frequently, this system is encountered in hydraulics, although it has been applied to other systems such as compressed air and vacuum system.

Boss system connectors should never be used with any type of connectors as leaks are likely. Under the high fluid systems, it is commonly used in the hydraulic system. A failure and leak in the piping arrangement are quite dangerous that could lead to severe damages.

It gives advantage to a system of being able to be tightened mechanically before sealed. In the most threaded system a seal provided by a taper in the thread, so it is difficult to orient both sides of the hose so that it is not twisted. The problem is eliminated because the threads do not seal the connection and thus, it can be rotated at least a full revolution before it gets tightened while maintaining proper mechanical joints. The orientation problem can be solved with suitable fittings applications.
