About alloy 20:
Alloy 20 is also known as carpentering 20. It is a nickel, chromium and iron alloy that is developed for improved resistance to acidic exposure. This is a superalloy has excellent resistance to general corrosion, crevice corrosion and pitting corrosion even in the chemical containing environments such as nitric acids, phosphoric acids, and other harsh acids. It has the niobium content that increases stabilization against sensitization and intergranular corrosion. It is combined with excellent corrosion resistance even with elevated mechanical properties. It is relatively easy to fabrication.
These are originally developed for use in an organic and inorganic compound containing environments. It also possesses great mechanical properties. It is the utmost choice for use in chemical exposure. In this alloy, there are minimal chances of carbide precipitation.
All commonly used welding operations can be successfully used except oxyacetylene. The composition of columbium tends to reduce the carbide precipitation even in the heat-affected zone. Preheating operations are not required in these bars. However, this grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment operations. The stabilized annealing operation is performed in temperature at 1750 deg F to 1850 deg F and followed by water quenching.
The stress relieving operation can be performed as in the annealed condition up to 950 deg F temp. The hot forming temperature starts from the 2100 deg F to 2225 deg F. to stabilize the grade after the hot working operations it is reheated at 1750 deg F to 1850 deg F.
This alloy has a good cold bending, pressing, bending and other forming operations that occur in the production of fabricated products. This alloy can normally press brake. This alloy has higher work hardening rates. It requires low surface cutting speeds compared with low alloy standards.
